Why Being A Member Of A Cooperative Matters
Your Poudre Valley REA is one of 22 electric co-ops in Colorado and more than 900 nationwide providing service to more than 40 million people. America’s rural electric co-ops face challenges unlike those of other utilities. Together, they own and maintain 2.5 million miles of power lines, or 42%, of the nation’s electric distribution grid, yet serve only 12% of the population. REA service areas cover three quarters of the nation’s landmass and, because the area is so large, have an average of only 7 customers per mile compared to 35 for investor-owned utilities (IOUs) and 47 for municipal owned utilities. Co-ops generate just $10,565 in revenue per mile, while IOUs and municipals produce $62,665 and $86,302, respectively. Unlike other utilities, REAs are member-owned and are guided by democratic principles that we, here at Poudre Valley, take very seriously.
Electric co-ops are owned by those they serve. That’s why those who receive electric service from us are called members, not customers. Without members, there would be no PVREA. Members maintain democratic control of our co-op, which means they elect fellow members to represent them on the board of directors every March at our annual meeting. Democratic control and consumer ownership are two of the Seven Cooperative Principles that guide our company and help to set us apart.
Another thing that sets co-ops apart is that they are operated on a not-for-profit basis. But cooperative businesses are nothing new, nor are they rare. The first successful cooperative was organized in 1752 when Benjamin Franklin formed the Philadelphia Contributionship of the Insurance of Houses from Loss by Fire. In addition to REAs, there are more than 40,000 U.S. cooperatives engaged in the business of America.
Co-ops include your local credit union and national brand names like Welch’s, Land O’Lakes, Ocean Spray, Sunkist, REI, Tillamook and ACE Hardware. |
