Recycle your CFL lightbulbs
Poudre Valley REA has several programs for members that encourage the purchase and use of Compact Florescent Lights. One reason for switching to CFLs is is because they are an example of how little things can make a big difference in energy conservation. Did you know that one CFL can save you $40 in electricity over it’s lifetime? And, did you know that if every home in America replaced just one incandescent bulb with a Compact Florescent we would save enough energy to power three million homes?
Promoting the use of CFLs includes encouraging the proper disposal of them, also. Because they contain mercury, CFLs should be recycled. There are many sources of mercury in an average home. Thermostats, light switches, computers, appliances, batteries, even the fillings in your teeth, are all sources of mercury. So are CFLs. Even though the amount of mercury in a CFL is smaller than the period at the end of this sentence, they should still be recycled.
CFL recycling locations:
• PVREA office 7649 REA Parkway, Fort Collins, CO
• Larimer County Household Hazardous Waste Facility (at the Larimer County landfill)
• Downtown Fort Collins Ace Hardware
• Clay's Ace Hardware
• Drake Hardware and Lumber
• Home Depot
• Sam's Club
• The Light Center
