Celebrating National Co-op Month

Every October since 1930, not-for-profit cooperatives of all stripes have celebrated Cooperative Month. During this time, it makes sense to highlight the qualities that make electric cooperatives different from other types of utilities and businesses. Did you know these fun facts about YOUR co-op?

  • PVREA is just one of 47,000 businesses who are cooperatives in America. There are other co-ops in America just like us, including the local Poudre Valley Co-op, bike co-ops, REI,
  • You are a member of PVREA, which means you’re much more than just a customer!
  • There are over 900 electric co-ops just like PVREA across America.
  • PVREA’s service territory covers over 2,000 square miles - all the way up to the Wyoming border, east over to Kersey, down to Boulder, and west near Cameron Pass.
  • Electric co-ops serve over 42 million consumers in the U.S.
  • We operate under 7 cooperative principles: voluntary and open membership; democratic member control; member’s economic participation; autonomy and independence; education, training, and information; cooperation among cooperatives; and a commitment to community. These values guide all cooperatives worldwide and make us stand out from other types of utilities.
  • PVREA serves over 38,000 homes and businesses.
  • We are driven by service, not profit.
  • Electric co-op lines cover 75 percent of America’s landmass.
  • We are owned by the members we serve.
  • Since we’re not-for-profit, we pride ourselves on providing you with at-cost electric service. That is the cooperative difference.
  • PVREA was formed in 1939 by its first members - local farmers in Northern Colorado.
  • Co-ops play an important role in community development, which includes our youth. That’s why we give out scholarships every year.
  • PVREA employs 85 men and women.
  • Our service territory covers Larimer, Weld and Boulder counties.
