Energy Outreach Colorado Designates $100,000 in Energy Assistance for PVREA Members

Energy Outreach Colorado has dedicated $100,000 to Poudre Valley Rural Electric Association (PVREA)  to help members pay off past due balances on their accounts after making the switch to the Pay As You Go prepaid metering account option.

“We’re excited to partner with Energy Outreach Colorado to help our members reduce past due balances and shift to an account option that benefits them the most. Pay As You Go is such a great tool to help members control their energy costs,” PVREA Member Services Supervisor Craig Muchison said.

This particular account option offers PVREA members to prepay for the energy use before they use it. As energy is used and money is spent on kilowatt-hours, the member is notified by phone, text or email that they need to make a payment to their account. The Pay As You Go account option also eliminates any disconnecting and reconnecting fees; if no payment is made, the service is disconnected remotely from PVREA’s office, and reconnected once payment has been made.

The Pay As You Go account option also actively monitor energy use in almost real-time, giving members the control of their energy use.

“It’s similar to the concept of filling up your gas tank. You pay for your gas before you use it. Pay As You Go is the same concept – members log into their account or call into the office to fill up their electricity tank with a payment,” CEO Jeff Wadsworth explains.

By using the co-op’s free SmartHub web, tablet and smartphone app, members can actively monitor electricity usage and potentially make changes to save on energy. Adding the payment option also gives members the opportunity to find a payment choice to fit every lifestyle. With the Pay As You Go option, deposits and disconnect fees do not exist. Members simply pay a minimum $25 payment into their accounts.

Electric cooperatives across the country have started offering a prepaid metering option to members, and in turn members are using less electricity and find it easier to make payments for their electric service.
