PVREA welcomed a new, residential member in the co-op’s service territory by actually helping build the home in Berthoud for Habitat for Humanity. Twenty-six PVREA employees worked alongside college students to install Berthoud Habitat for Humanity’s latest edition – the “DURA House”.
This unique house was actually constructed by a group of college students from the New York City College of Technology (NYCCT) as part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2015 Solar Decathlon, an international collegiate competition to design and build an energy-efficient home. The DURA (Diverse, Urban, Resilient, Adaptable) house is an innovative solar-powered, energy efficient home that combines affordability and design excellence.
Jan Dowker, the Executive Director for Berthoud Habitat for Humanity, said the organization was given the unique opportunity to purchase the home along with its state-of-the-art smart home technology for the same price they would pay for a traditional stick-built home, “It was an incredible chance for us to team up with the college and at the same time change the face of affordable housing for families in our community.”
PVREA worked alongside students and professors from NYCCT, along with other volunteers, throughout the end of June to build the house.
“What a rewarding experience to construct a home for one of our members in need, and to work on a home that won an international competition for its excellence in energy-efficient design. As a co-op which works for the community we serve, for us to take part in this project was right up our alley,”PVREA Communications Specialist Jessica Johnson commented.
Through this project, Berthoud Habitat hopes to be a forerunner in the effort to incorporate these innovative, energy-saving buildings as a valid option for affordable housing in Colorado.
Dowker said she sees this type of home as an affordable solution that other Habitat affiliates could incorporate into what they offer, “Our main goal is to build our housing capacity to help more families; partnerships like these grow our ability to help more families in need.”
Berthoud Habitat for Humanity is a local organization of Habitat for Humanity International.
